About this app

The Statue of Liberty, officially known as Liberty Enlightening the World, is a monumental statue and observation tower that has been the symbol of America since 1886 on Liberty Island in New York City, USA. It is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world.

The Statue of Liberty, made of copper, was gifted to the USA by France on its 100th anniversary. It was built between 1884-1886. It is located on Liberty Island in New York City, USA.

The statue holds a torch in its right hand and oratory in its left hand. On the tablet is inscribed the date of July 4, 1776 (the Declaration of Independence). The seven-pointed ends of the crown on the head of the statue represent seven continents or seven seas. The height of the figure is 46 meters and 93 meters with its pedestal. Visitors can climb a 168-step staircase from inside the statue to the torch. The height of the statue's right hand holding the torch is 13 meters. Fifteen people can walk together in the corridor around the torch. The width of the statue's head is 2 meters, and its height is 5 meters with its crown.

The Statue of Liberty is open to visitors. Those who want to visit the island can reach the island by ferry, climb the stairs to the torch and watch the New York harbor.

Isabelle Eugenie Boyer, a widow of Isaac Singer, the founder of Singer sewing machines, modeled the statue. One year after the Statue of Liberty was completed in France in 1884, it was divided into 350 pieces and transported to New York harbor in 214 boxes. The pieces were reassembled on the pedestal within four months and unveiled in front of thousands of spectators on October 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1984. A more miniature copy of the statue is in Paris and faces the Atlantic Ocean. There are also small copies in other parts of the world (such as Osaka, Pristina, Beijing, Nevada, South Dakota, Bordeaux, Poitiers).
