About this app

"1984" is a dystopian science fiction novel written by George Orwell and published in 1949. The story is set in a future world divided into three totalitarian superstates in perpetual war. The protagonist, Winston Smith, lives in the superstate of Oceania, where the Party, led by Big Brother, exerts total control over the population, eradicating all forms of individual freedom and critical thought.

Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, where his role is to rewrite history to always align with the party line, thus erasing any trace of objective truth. Despite omnipresent surveillance and psychological manipulation, Winston develops a critical consciousness of the totalitarian regime under which he lives and starts an inner resistance. He begins a clandestine love affair with Julia, a colleague who shares his doubts and desire for rebellion.

The novel explores themes such as mass surveillance, manipulation of truth and history, loss of individual freedom, and the use of language as a tool of political control through "Newspeak," a language designed to limit the scope of critical thought. "1984" is a warning against the dangers of totalitarianism, illustrating how an authoritarian government can manipulate reality to consolidate its power and suppress any opposition.
