About this app

Palace is a free, easy-to-use e-reader app that lets you find, check out, and read or listen to books from your local library.

It’s been said that libraries are “palaces for the people” and the Palace app gives you instant access to your local “palace” any time, right from the palm of your hand.

All you need to sign up is your library card! And even if your library isn’t using Palace yet, you can still read more than 10,000 books--from children’s books to classics to foreign language books--for free from our Palace Bookshelf.

The Palace app is built and maintained by The Palace Project, a not-for-profit division of LYRASIS working in partnership with Digital Public Library of America with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. For more, visit https://thepalaceproject.org.

This app is so finicky. It has access to great content but reading is tricky. The screen goes to black frequently which then kicks you out of the book. If you tap a letter it immediately highlights it and you have to select one of the options to make it unhighlight. The letter size does not stay at your preference if you have to momentarily close the app. It's a frustrating reading experience.

Very glitchy, terrible UI, limited features, not conducive to browsing, like I can't just search for latest fiction or to filter out books that aren't even available. I get return notifications for books that I already borrowed/returned via Libby. The one audiobook that I successfully took out then didn't even play. I have yet to have a positive experience with this app. Prefer Libby and Hoopla. If this app got some updates and better navigating and playback features I'm sure it would be usable.

I downloaded the app for the audiobooks and the selection is severely lacking. I'm not sure what the point of the app is when I can access way more books through cloud library or hoopla. Also, the main catalog showed a lot more books, but there was no way to download them so maybe that's just for libraries to access? who knows since the website doesn't provide much guidance.

Hi Rebecca, We partner with libraries to provide access to ebooks from vendors they partner with in addition to content they've purchased from us. It varies by library. If you contact us at support@thepalaceproject.org, we'd be happy to help you further.

What's new

* Fixed a bug that sometimes caused the app to display a blank screen after resuming from the background.
* Fixed a bug that sometimes caused reading position to reset to the beginning of a chapter.
