Abdurrahman Wahid, who is familiar with Gus Dur's nickname, is a true fighter for democracy, the father of pluralism, a non-violence figure, defender of marginalized people who are voiceless as well as a protector of religious minorities, gender, beliefs, ethnicity, race, and also social position, despite blasphemed by the majority group and even among themselves.

The upholding of democracy in Indonesia is Gus Dur's old dream. Both when in power and outside power, he continued to serve and oversee democratization. When power is in his hands, he uses it as best as possible for the benefit of the people, society at large. And, when power must be released, he releases it without a heavy heart, let it go. Power is not everything.

For him, "Devotion is not necessary with any position. People can serve in various capacities, it's the same. Depends on the person."

Likewise, his unyielding struggle in promoting pluralism. For Gus Dur, diversity is God's grace. Conversely, rejecting pluralism is the same as denying God's gift. Differences are inevitable, because of that Gus Dur views differences as a gift rather than just a choice. And as a blessing, diversity will surely benefit the nation.

Whatever Gus Dur does is an attempt to anticipate all disparities in the framework of humanizing humans. In this book, the author presents Gus Dur's struggles and thoughts, how should we place him as the nation's teacher, what should we emulate, without forgetting his biography.

For us, even though the fighters and guardians of pluralism and democracy are no longer with us, the effort to preserve pluralism and democracy is the biggest award for him, far bigger than the awarding of a national hero that is being proposed by many parties. Happy reading!
