Ruling on Touching Mushaf and Reciting Al-Quran for Menstruating and Hadats Women

A. Language

The term mushhaf is formed from the word shahîfah; the plural is shahâ'if, shuhuf.

Ibn Duraid mentions in Jumhurah al-Lughah, shahîfah is a whitish skin or thin sheet/plate, for writing.

Al-Azhari (d. 370 H) in the Al-Mu'jam Al-Wasith dictionary stated that the object was called mushaf because it is ushifa, namely the name for the object written on it in kalamullah and flanked by two sides. (ismum lil maktubati fihi kalamullah ta'ala bainad duffataini).

Al-Jauhari (d. 400) in Ash-Shihah fî al-Lughah, said that shahîfah is the book. So, in terms of shahîfah—the plural for shuhuf—can be interpreted as writing sheets.

B. Terms

Al-Qalyubi (d. 1069 H) in the book Hasyiyata Al-Qalyubi wa Umariah stated that what is meant by the Al-Quran Mushaf is an object written on it in Arabic letters in the form of Al-Quran verses.

Ibn Hubaib said that a mushaf includes both complete verses of the Koran or only a part of it, even if it is only written on a piece of paper with one letter written on it.
