The law of prostration for sahwi

There are differences among the scholars regarding the law of prostration for sahwi. Generally, the scholars are of the opinion that the law is sunnah, but there are also those who argue that it is obligatory in certain cases.

1. Sunnah

The majority of scholars including the Maliki, Shafi'i and one tradition from the Hanbali school say that the law of prostration for sahwi is sunnah and not obligatory.

The basis of their opinion says that the law of sunnah is a hadith narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri:

"If you are in doubt in the (number of cycles of) prayer, then leave doubts and make sure it is above belief. When you have finished praying, prostrate twice. If it turns out that the cycle of prayer is complete, then the cycle and the two prostrations (sahwi) become nafilah (additional worship), whereas if the prayer is lacking and it is complete with one additional cycle, then prostration for sahwi is a deception for satan."

The point of emphasis on this argument is at the end of the hadith, namely when the Messenger of Allah mentions: then the rak'ah and the two prostrations (sahwi) become nafilah (additional worship). Explicitly, his words said that the law is nafilah, which means additional or sunnah.

2. Mandatory

While the opinion that says that prostration for sahwi is obligatory, among others, is said by the Hanafi school and some of the opinion of the Hanbali school which is ultimate.
