The app is alright. It would be nice if it could download email updates in the background instead of only when you open the app. It only decrypts your mailbox when you open the app though so it's a tradeoff. They can put metadata in notifications now, so seems like it could be possible For those complaining, this is not a Gmail replacement nor is it intended to be. It is an app and service that focuses on security and privacy above *all* else and for that you'll give up many bells and whistles.

Thanks for the review of our encrypted email app. Which email updates are you referring to? Incoming mail or notifications? If these are not arriving while the app is closed, please make sure you don't have battery optimization turned on, this restricts what our app can do in the background.

There is only one option for unlocking the application: Automatic unlock. In other words the application is secured by your phone pin only. Personally I prefer an application specific password for any phone application that I want to pretend is at least a tiny bit secure. Fortunately Tuta provides a web page that is mobile friendly and seems identical in appearance and functionality to the Android "application", as well as being more secure. I now use that instead on phones, tablets and PC.

Thanks for your feedback on our encrypted email app. We will pass along your request for an app specific password/pin to our development team.

I wouldn't recommend it as a main email. Email isn't really designed for encryption, so anything sent from or to another service won't be encrypted (unless you send it and use their weird shared password thing). I also don't really like the app, and you can't use anything else. I highly recommend using an email service that supports IMAP (most everything except Tuta and Proton). All that said, if you don't care about any of that I do trust them more with my email than Google.
