Threema is the world’s best-selling secure messenger and keeps your data out of the hands of hackers, corporations, and governments. The service can be used completely anonymously. Threema is open source and offers every feature one would expect from a state-of-the-art instant messenger. The app also allows you to make end-to-end encrypted voice, video, and group calls. Using the desktop app and the web client, you can also use Threema from your desktop.
PRIVACY AND ANONYMITY Threema is designed from the ground up to generate as little data on servers as possible. Group memberships and contact lists are managed on your device only and never stored on our servers. Messages are immediately deleted after they have been delivered. Local files are stored encrypted on your mobile phone or tablet. All this effectively prevents the collection and misuse of your personal information, including metadata. Threema is fully compliant with the European privacy legislation (GDPR).
ROCK-SOLID ENCRYPTION Threema end-to-end encrypts all your communication, including messages, voice and video calls, group chats, files, and even status messages. Only the intended recipient, and nobody else, can read your messages. Threema uses the trusted open source NaCl cryptography library for encryption. The encryption keys are generated and safely stored on the users’ devices to prevent backdoor access or copies.
COMPREHENSIVE FEATURES Threema is not only an encrypted and private messenger but also versatile and feature-rich.

Pretty cool application for encrypted messages, security is important to me but Threema is missing out on a huge opportunity to compartmentalize an SMS platform and offer the best of both worlds. I know the intention is to not cause confusion, but there are ways to mitigate that from a GUI perspective to differentiate the two services and it's disappointing to see such an expensive application that is missing out on that opportunity.

Thank you for your review! We will be happy to forward this internally as a suggestion. However, privacy and security are our highest priorities. Since SMS cannot meet these requirements, we have not supported SMS so far and there are no plans to do so at the moment.

I was an early adopter of Threema, and have continued to use it over the years. It's a great app! A little more simplistic than something like Telegram, but far more secure...perfect for private messaging. I am liking the newer features, like the distribution list. Would love to see "channels", or at least an option to disable comments and/or hide members in group chats...for things like news feeds, diaries, , or album displays.

Considered this app to replace soon to be gone BBMe (which I used for about 15 years and loved). So far, I am not disappointed. However, few features could be a nice addition (and a 5 star rating) 1. Ability to edit the text message once it was sent and even if read by the recipient 2. Ability to retract the text even if already seen/ read by the recipient 3. Ability to export chats Thank you! Updated on 9/8/24 changing my rating from 4 to 5 stars -the ability to edit and delete texts is great!
