About this app

This Android application is Between Us, Bodies, Graves - Ahmad Zarkasih, Lc. In PDF format.

Reading the Koran at the Grave

This is a problem that has been practiced by almost all Indonesian Muslims for a long time, but recently it has become foreign and forbidden to do; because of the many campaigns on the internet that this work is work that is unfounded and leads to shirk. What's more, it is supported by the many young preachers who actually agree with this opinion.

As a result, many of us who used to be used to this work have become doubtful and anxious, worried that what they have been doing all this time is a sin.

But in fact, none of the muktamad fiqh scholars called the act a sin, let alone a bid'ah.

The following is the opinion of the scholars of 4 madhhabs regarding the problem of reading the Koran in graves.

1. Makruh

This opinion is held by scholars from the al-Malikiyah circle. They view that the work of reading the Qur'an at the cemetery for the deceased, which is set aside or leveled for all the corpses in the cemetery, was never exemplified by the Prophet s.a.w and his companions.

There is no history that explicitly states that the Prophet s.a.w. and friends are busy going back and forth to the cemetery to read the Koran there and present the reward to the deceased. That's no example.

However, the scholars in his time (Imam Malik r.a.) lived actually did this a lot. And as it has been agreed that reading the Qur'an in the grave is something that is not prohibited and even recommended. Even more so for the ahl-kasyf or commonly called Tasawwuf experts.

The absence of examples from the Prophet s.a.w and his companions, but being used as something recommended by the scholars of his time, made the Imam cautious. Therefore he judged it as something that is makruh.
