Haram But Not Mahram
It can be said that muhrim is a misguided term for mahram. It's not uncommon for people to use it wrongly. For example; "Don't get close, not a muhrim".
Indeed, in Arabic writing, both have the same letter. But the two terms have different meanings.
Muhrim comes from the basic formation of ahrama-yuhrimu-ihraman, which means doing ihram worship. And the meaning of muhrim is a person who is doing ihram worship, both hajj and umrah. When pilgrims or Umrah pilgrims have entered the miqat area, then someone wears his ihram clothes, and avoids all the restrictions on ihram, then that person is called a muhrim.
Meanwhile, a mahram is any woman who is forbidden to marry forever, because of something permissible, because of her illegal status.
Mahram comes from the meaning of haram, the opposite of the word halal. It means something that is forbidden and should not be done.
In the Al-Mu'jam Al-Wasith dictionary it is stated that al-mahram is dzul-hurmah, namely women who are forbidden to marry.
