Vilgelm Steynits - Austrian and American chess player, the first official World Chess Champion (1886-1894). Steinitz developed the doctrine of positional play, which has replaced dominant "romantic" matching school and greatly enriched the chess.
"At a tournament in Paris in 1867 and in Baden-Baden 1870, I had hoped to take first place. Failing to do so, I had to think about, and came to the conclusion that the combination game, though, and gives sometimes interesting results can not ensure sustained success "(B. Steinitz).
"Steinitz was a thinker worthy of a university chair of player he was not:. To do this, it was too much he was defeated by the player, and died a little estimated of the world." (Um Lasker.).
