About this app

The Veda is the name of the oldest and holiest scripture of the Hindus. It has four main parts: Rig Veda, Yajurveda, Sam Veda and Atharva Veda. The Veda (Sanskrit véda Veda "knowledge") was written in ancient India. They organized the oldest level of Sanskrit literature on Hinduism.

There are four Vedas in number - Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda. The Rig Veda is the predominant and most ancient of these. The Rig Veda is divided into ten mandalas. There are many suktas in each mandala. Each sukta is composed of many riks or mantras. Each sukta is a hymn composed for one or more deities.

There are 1,026 suktas with a total of 10,552 riks in the ten mandalas of the Rigveda. Of these, 11 suktas with 80 riks belonging to the eighth mandala are called balkhilya suktas. Sainacharya does not accept these to be included in the Rig Veda. That is why he did not write a commentary on them. Excluding them, the number of suktas in the Rig Veda stands at 1,017 and the number of riks stands at 10,462.
