About this app

The present calculator estimates the International bittering units (IBUs) that will be produced from hops of a given weight, alpha acid percentage, and boil time.

International bittering units (IBUs) are used to tell how bitter your beer is (higher value means more bitterness). The IBU scale starts at zero for beers with no bitterness (fruit beers) and goes up to 120 for the super bitter and hop rich beers like Imperial IPA and American Barley Wine. You can use this calculator when crafting your own recipe to ensure your beer fits the category you are shooting for.

To get started, fill in the initial data for calculation: Post Boil Size, Target Original Gravity (in percent or specific gravity). Click the "Add Hops" button and specify the hop weight, the percentage of alpha acids in the hops and the boil time. Click OK and at the bottom of the screen will give you the calculated value in International Bitterness Units (IBU). If you want to make multiple additions, click the "Add Hops" button again and repeat the steps above.

The IBU calculator takes into account both the time of boil and the wort gravity during the boil. The numbers have been developed by Glenn Tinseth, based partly on data and partly on experience. Your experience and brewing practices may be different so here’s.
