Helped me learn hiragana and katakana along with Duolingo - but this taught me to write much better than Duo did. I wish there were practice options in between "learn" and "test", though. People tend to learn best through spaced repetition, and in order to do that, I had to manually repeat lessons. Even just an option to repeat each unit as a full chunk instead of selecting each individual letter would make a big difference.

So far this is a fantastic app for learning the alphabets, very straightforward, the teaching method is extremely helpful and works very well for me. There's only one issue; I'm 30 characters into Hiragana, so far the only issue I have is with "Mo". 150/150 times, No matter how close I am to it being right, it's ALWAYS incorrect. I've screenshotted the given example and followed it exactly while doing it myself. They look identical but it's still always wrong. At this point it feels like a bug.

This app helped me to learn Hiragana and Katakana at my own pace and the mnemonics provided really help you remember the characters. It was a lot harder than I was expecting when I first got started, but the reviews make you draw each character multiple times and then plays the sound after each one so you end up learning then very well. I highly recommend this app for anyone learning Japanese! The one time fee of $8 is very low for how much value this app provides!
