[What is Sanno Festival]
The Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine is usually held in June, during which various large and small festivals are held, such as a tea ceremony and a children's procession. Since it was the guardian deity of Edo Castle, the Edo shogunate paid for the festival, so it was also called ``Tenka Festival'' or ``Goyo Festival.''
[Regular festival and Shinko festival]
The most important festivals of the Sanno Festival are the regular festival held on June 15th every year and the Shinko Festival held every other year.
The annual festival is the most important ritual for a shrine, and is held at all shrines across the country.
The Shinko Festival is an event in which the deity is carried on a phoenix and the parishioners visit each town, and is currently held every other year, alternating with Kanda Myojin Shrine. Because Hie Shrine was originally enshrined within Edo Castle, it was brought to Edo Castle and inspected by successive shoguns. Even today, as befits the name Tenkasai, a procession of about 500 people wearing gorgeous costumes walks a distance of nearly 20 kilometers to each shrine parishioner town.
