Ulyanovsk, previously called Simbirsk, is a city in Russia, the capital of the homonymous Oblast. In 1924 the city from Simbirsk was renamed Ulyanovsk in honor of Vladimir Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, who was born in Simbirsk in 1870. Two other Russian political leaders, Alexander Kerensky and Alexander Protopopov, were also born in Simbirsk.
In addition to the house where Lenin was born, transformed into a museum, there is a regional museum and a library, in which the collections and libraries of two great Russian writers, the historian Karamzin and the short story writer GonĨakov, were gathered. An important river port, it is a very active center for the timber trade.
