About this app

With the podwalk app you walk and listen at the same time. Walk with Winfried Baijens through areas in the Netherlands and listen to stories about flood disasters in history and about protection against the water in the future.

Go to the starting location, put in your earphones or headphones, and the app will do the rest. Winfried tells you during the route what happened at the places where you walk. He tells you about how residents armed themselves against the water, how they fled from it, but also how they learned to live with the water.

You can see where you are on the map in the app, but Winfried knows this exactly and tells you where to go and where to look.
You have the best experience when you start at the starting point because the stories are built up from A to Z. But you can also get in halfway through. Then you can always listen to the rest of the story later.

You can also use augmented reality in the app. With this you experience on location how high the water came or you see a glimpse of history.
The stories are suitable for all ages. And therefore perhaps the best choice for an active and educational day out. Would you rather have a taste before you hit the road? You can listen to a preview of each walk in the app. This way you know exactly which route best suits your plans for the day.

Compatibility:
You download the app and you can go straight away. You don't need an account. Neither does mobile data, because you can already download the routes to your phone at home. Your GPS will take care of the rest.

Features:

The podwalk app was created in connection with the 4-part television series The water comes! on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the flood disaster of 1953. The podwalks are about different disasters at different locations. You can just walk the routes without seeing the series. Do you also want to see the TV series or other TV programs about the Watersnoodramp? In the app you will find a link to the TV series and other related programs on NPO Start.

The app has a list view of all routes. Prefer to see it on a map? The map view shows you which routes are near you.

Each walk states how many kilometers it is and how long it takes. For questions, there is a HELP page in the app that contains frequently asked questions.

Accessibility: With all podwalks, the audio tours are also offered as text in the app. A number of routes are wheelchair accessible.

Technical information:

The app uses your GPS location and the routes can be downloaded in advance. If you do that, you don't need WiFi or a mobile network during the route. You just have to press start and put the phone in your pocket.
The GPS and audio data can be removed in the app so that you can free up space on your phone.
