About this app

This Android application is Traveling Without a Mahram by Aini Aryani, Lc. In PDF format.

Traveling Without a Mahram

The case of women traveling out of town or abroad without being accompanied by a mahram is indeed quite interesting to us.

In the midst of the fact that there are so many Hajj or Umrah groups where most of the women are not accompanied by a mahram, we are presented with vulgar and explicit hadiths that forbid it.

For example the following hadith:

From Ibn Umar radhiyallahuanhu that the Prophet SAW said, "Do not let a woman travel for three days except with her mahram". (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

And there are many more authentic hadiths that are similar and the text clearly states the prohibition.

Even though we also witness that there are hundreds of thousands and even millions of Indonesian women working in Saudi Arabia. They don't only visit 9 days for Umrah or 40 days for Hajj. They live and settle in the land of people for many years. Their work contracts are generally at least 2 years, after which they are usually extended for decades. However, none of them were accompanied by their mahram. They become 'alone' in other people's lands, without husbands, children, brothers and even relatives.

More than that, in Saudi Arabia or in Egypt we find many female students or female students from various countries, who are studying. Neither of them was accompanied by a mahram. Even though it took at least 4 years to finish college.

Then what about the hadith that prohibits women from traveling for more than 3 days above? Is everything so sinful because it violates the provisions of the Prophet SAW? Do the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Government of Egypt have to go to hell all because they have allowed women without mahram to live in their country?
