"Utsuro Nikki" is a horror game based on the concept of exchanging diaries with a hollow girl. As the protagonist, the player becomes a girl's friend, confronting her inner darkness while unraveling the mystery of her creepy diary.
The stage is school life that is common at school. Dark rooms, dimly lit corridors, and eerie music and sound effects add tension to the player.

The game progresses in the form of an exchange diary. The protagonist can obtain her girl's diary and send her his own diary. The contents of the diary are written about the girl's depressive symptoms, her internal conflicts, and experiences of strange phenomena. Depending on the player's choices and actions, the girl's state and the progress of the story will change.

Mysteries and codes are hidden in the girl's diary, and the player will face the terrifying truth, such as the existence of the girl's trauma.
The ending branches depending on the player's choices and actions, and the girl's fate and the player's own fate are affected. Also, certain choices and behaviors may cause players to suffer from depression themselves.

[Effect of the game]

Psychological Horror: Over the course of the exchange diary, details about the girl's depression and eerie events will be revealed. The player can feel tension and anxiety by touching the darkness of the girl's heart. As the story progresses, the player himself feels a connection with the girl, and the fear increases as he gets involved in spooky events.

I saw the advertisement for the game and thought it looked insane so I downloaded it as a joke. After playing through the first storyline completely, I'm really impressed. There are some things left not translated, but it's understandable, and translation is hard. Other things got messed up in translation, but most of the game actually translated to English very well! I've yet to play the past story! I love the horror aspects of it, although the yandere thing is overused. I like how they did it!

For what this game tries to do it does it perfectly! I have played many Visual Novels in my life (about 80 hours) and I can say that this game is excellent! It is a game you can finish fairly quick I finished the student edition in abt 30 mins and I think that the Lolita edition should take about that long as well. The character designs are a bit generic but are great for a free game. The voice acting is top notch and the actors pull it off perfectly. If I could I would pay the $9 play more.
