I want to read cursive script materials! But I can't read it! "Mio" is an application that helps such people. If you take a picture of the material with a camera and press a button, AI will convert the junk characters into modern characters. Welcome to the world of cursive script.
The ROIS-DS Humanities Open Data Shared Use Center (CODH) has developed an AI shaving character recognition technology that has the function of converting (reprinting) the shaving characters contained in images into modern characters. The AI kuzuji recognition smartphone app "miwo" was developed with the aim of making this technology easy for anyone to use.
"Mio" is named after "Mio Tsukushi", the 14th book of "Genji Monogatari". Just as "Mio Tsukushi" serves as a pilot guide for people, we aim to use the "Mio" app as a guide for traveling through the sea of cursive script materials.

[What you can do with the miwo app]
★ It is possible to recognize junk characters and convert (reprint) them into modern characters for images taken with a camera or images downloaded from the Internet.
★ The recognized characters can be displayed on the image. You can also display a rectangle that represents the position of the characters.
★ If the recognition result is incorrect, you can correct the characters.
★ You can output the recognition result as text, copy it, and use it in other apps.
★ You can save the recognition result in the app and recall it later.
★ You can search for examples of cursive script from within the app by linking with CODH's cursive script data set.

【Notes】
-Since the AI of the "Mio" app learns the junk-character data collected from the prints of the Edo period, the accuracy of the prints of the Edo period is relatively high, but materials of other times, manuscripts, etc. For old documents, etc., the accuracy may decrease.
――The accuracy may decrease depending on the condition of materials such as stains, worm-eaten, paper patterns, and the shooting environment such as lighting and shadows.
――At present, we cannot recognize the jumbled characters written on stone monuments and signboards.
--This application does not require user registration and does not collect personal information. In addition, we do not collect individual identification information of terminals.
--The image uploaded from this application to the server for kanji character recognition and the recognition result are not saved on the server.
――The content of the document decrypted using this application may contain information about personal privacy, so please respect the rights of third parties when sharing / publishing the content.

新規開発したAIくずし字認識システムRURI（瑠璃）を利用します。従来のAIくずし字認識モデルと比較して、RURIにはAI物体検出技術をくずし字認識に最適化するための工夫が加えられており、文字背景の色や模様が複雑な場合でも精度が向上しています。また国文学研究資料館が作成しCODHが公開する、100万文字以上の「日本古典籍くずし字データセット」を独自に強化することで、これまで認識できなかった文字が新たに認識できるようになりました。
