Meaning and Significance of the Koran

The meaning of the Koran according to language comes from the verb qaraa which means: "(he) has read". From this understanding, the Koran means "reading" or "something that is read repeatedly". The meaning of the Koran in terms of language is based on the words of Allah in the Koran surah Al-Qiyamah verses 16-18:

“Don't move your tongue to read the Koran because you will quickly (master) it. Indeed, it is upon Us to collect them (in your bosom) and (make you clever) in reading them. When We have finished reciting it, follow the recitation."

According to the explicit meaning of the verse above, the Qur'an is defined as "reading", namely the words of Allah which are read repeatedly.

As for the definition of the Koran in terms of terms, Muhammad 'Ali ash-Shabuni wrote it as follows:

"The Koran is the incomparable word of Allah, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, the Seal of the Prophets and Apostles, through the intermediary of the Angel Jibril 'alaihissalam and written on mushafs which were then conveyed to us mutawatir, and reading and studying it is an act of worship, which begins with Surah Al-Fatihah and closed with Surah An-Nas”.

The Koran as something incomparable can be found in Surah Al-Isra' verse 88:

"Say: 'Indeed, if humans and jinn came together to do something like this Koran, they would certainly not be able to make something like it, even if some of them became helpers for others.'"

The Koran as a revelation sent down by Allah into the heart of the Prophet Muhammad SAW through the Angel Gabriel, can be found in Surah Asy-Syu'ara verses 192-194:

“And indeed, this Koran was truly revealed by the Lord of the worlds. He was brought down by Ar-Ruh Al-Amin (Jibril) into your heart (Muhammad) so that you would become one of those who give warnings."

Allah's guarantee of reward for those who read and study the Qur'an is stated in Surah Al-Isra' verse 45 as follows:

"And when you read the Koran, We will certainly place between you and those who do not believe in the afterlife, a closed wall."

The application of the name "Qur'an" to the entire content of the Qur'an manuscripts is based on the word of Allah in Surah Al-Isra' verse 9 as follows:

"Indeed, this Koran provides guidance to a straighter (path) and gives good news to the Mu'min who do righteous deeds that for them there is a great reward."
