About this app

DEX for Android is an OFFLINE and online Romanian Explanatory Dictionary (Dicționar Explicativ Român) based on the well-known http://dexonline.ro, while being packed together with educational games and containing many options for configuration.


Widget config

For the widget to work you need to:
1. install DEX application on the internal memory - the widget won't work if you move the app to the external card (limitation from Android)
2. install the offline database

Install offline database

A. Install automatically the offline database (on the internal card) by choosing the last option 'Download file' from the 'Preferences' screeen
or
B. Install manually the offline database - see tutorial. This method does not work for Android 11+.

Permissions

The app requires permissions for what Google Play reports as Photos/Media/Files:
● read, modify or delete the contents of your USB storage: because it needs access to the sdcard in case you download the offline database

● WAKE_LOCK, FOREGROUND_SERVICE: added option to automatically download offline database in the internal memory - see Preferences screen. Because of this, these two new permissions are required

● RECORD_AUDIO if you want to use your voice for input, instead of typing

● INSTALL_SHORTCUT add new icon on the home screen to start the application directly going to microphone (see Preferences - install shortcut on start screen)

Ratings and reviews

The dictionary itself works fine, but there is so much other content jammed into the app that can be distracting or annoying. Previously, it did not bother me, becuase you could just ignore it, but now it takes up half the screen, with an ad for a blog being the first thing you see when you try to look up a word. I am editing my review yet again. The developer makes claims to emotional intelligence and education, yet takes retribution for "abusing 12 years of work" by not leaving a 5 stars.

Fabulous! The offline availability of database - brilliant idea. So, you can use the app even when Internet is down. Voice search - very handy. Also, the word games are a good idea - I'm not a gaming fan, but these games I play. Very useful features - history, list of favourite words, widgets. Good functionality, lots of preferences to set. The very best Romanian dictionary app so far. Excellent quality, hard to find in free apps, no annoying ads. All in all, the very best. Thank you so much!

It randomly stops working when I search for words, giving some socket timeout error. I'm not sure what the point of using sockets is, as I already have the dictionary file downloaded. And as other users mentioned, there's a lot of bloat in this app, and some searches put an article written by the developer at the top of the results.
