About this app
8 EFFECT is a mobile app designed by researchers from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and by a telecommunications engineer with the aim of bringing the general public closer to the effects and geometric alignments produced by the Sun's rays when passing through the colored stained glass windows of the East rose window of the Cathedral of Mallorca as it is projected onto the inner face of the wall of the main façade of the same cathedral. In addition to providing more precise information about these already known light effects, with laser scanning techniques and basic concepts of astronomy and geometry, this app graphically presents other novel effects that occur during certain religious festivities celebrated throughout the year.
It is well known, especially in Mallorca, that every year on the same dates and at practically the same time, the Sun projects the eastern rose window on the inner face of the wall of the main façade and positions itself below the western rose window, thus forming, the celebrated and well-known "Effect of 8" or "Fiesta de la Luz". This light effect happens every February 2 and every November 11; specifically, for the Candelaria festivity and for San Martín de Tours, respectively. Both dates are equidistant, respectively, 40 days and 43 days from Christmas Day, and the position of both projections is not exactly equivalent. As a pure coincidence, we can say that the day of Candelaria coincides with the date of birth of Jaime I of Aragón, who orchestrated the conquest of Mallorca in the 13th century.
Thus, with what has been said above, in addition to providing more precise information on the lighting effects already known, this APP presents: effects produced by the Sun inside the Cathedral of Mallorca that we consider novel from the point of view that they are not commonly has noticed them, and a graphic analysis of the projection of its eastern rose window during certain religious festivities celebrated throughout the year.
