Nafah al-Tayyib from the moist branch of Andalusia, a compilation authored by al-Maqri al-Tilmisani. It is one of the oldest Andalusian books to come to light. It is an important historical encyclopedia in the study of the history, literature and geography of Andalusia. Al-Maqri stated in the introduction to his book that he wrote it in response to the request of Imam Mawla al-Shahini, a professor of the Jaqmiyah school in Damascus, and said: “I resolved to answer the rights of the mentioned Ali, and how to meet his righteousness with disobedience. He made his title first, “Knowing Al-Tayyib in Introducing the Minister Ibn Al-Khatib.” When he saw that his material had expanded to include Andalusia, literature and history, he changed its title to “Nafah Al-Tayyib from the moist branch of Andalusia, and its minister mentioned Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib.”
This book came in two parts, a part that talks about Andalusia, the Andalusian cities and their inhabitants, describing its climate, clarifying its area, defining its lands and the first people to inhabit it, describing the inhabitants of Andalusia and their love for science and literature, their behaviors and their social characteristics, and the far-reaching status they have reached in the field of science and literature. And the other part on the news of the minister Ibn al-Khatib.
In his book, Al-Maqri relied on sources from which only a few have reached us, such as Al-Maghrib by Ibn Saeed, Muthumah al-Anfs by Ibn Khaqan, and al-Muthim al-Kabir. The compiler finished the book on Sunday, Ramadan 27, 1038 AH, then added chapters to it, which he completed in Dhul-Hijjah in the year 1039 AH. He had written this book while he was in Cairo, abroad from his country Tlemcen (in Algeria).
