Learn elementary Japanese words at your own pace:
GENKI Vocab Cards is a digital vocabulary card app that enables users to learn approximately 1,200 words essential for beginners along with the native pronunciations at their own pace!

This is the official app from GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 1.2 million copies sold.

Advantages
◆Users can view the cards and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.
◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.
◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the card deck, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.

Study methods and functions
◇ “My Deck” allows users to view the cards over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・The words can be studied by working from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・Learners can listen to natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese.
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Each card also includes an example sentence with an English translation and a recording of its pronunciation.

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・Retention can be checked by going from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・The cards of words already mastered are taken out of the set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The word cards can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.
・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order.

○This app is based on the vocabulary from the second edition of GENKI.
○It functions the same as the iPhone version of GENKI Vocab Cards.
○Ads: The app does not display any ads that might interfere with learning.
○Two more apps, GENKI Kanji Cards and GENKI Conjugation Cards, are to be released.

Let me begin by saying I use this app OFTEN. It is far better than carrying around a ton of flash cards. HOWEVER, two things I wish would change; First being tapping the words to show the answer. I would prefer it stay on the screen longer than 2 milliseconds. Second, I would like to see an option while practicing to hear the word spoken. I know you can go to a different location to do this but it would be far better to just be able to so it while your studying the words.

Read some of the negative reviews... I think the app has been updated. I find it easy to use and worth it. Can quiz in either direction...just shows the English, or just shows the Japanese. Also includes sentence for context. Plus, it reads it alowed if you wish. Excellent aid to learning vocabulary, which I have a hard time with.

Easy 5 stars.... I was initially put off by the humble simple not so standardized look of the app. Especially compared to other flash card apps. App is meant to integrate with the text book, however it is valuable on its own. What you get: Normally used Kanji has hiragana superscripts. Audio examples of word on front of card and audio examples of simple sentences on the back of card. The audio is spoken at a reasonable speed. Good simple kanji/hiragana/katakana sentence examples on the back of the card, where the rest of the sentence is at the learning level of the card. You can review the cards as Japanese or English. You can shuffle cards You can temporarily remove cards that you already know. You can pick multiple lesson card sets. An English<>Japanese dictionary where all of the entries are from the cards. Cards are grouped by the learning level of the text book. What could be better: If your screen is set to full zoom, the show answer button covers the hiragana. Dictionary when viewed as English is alphabetized only by the first letter of the word, so you have to look for the word.
