The artist Dennis Rudolph has placed a virtual gate between Europe's largest urban development project and the end of the western world: With this app you can listen to the sounds of Richard Wagner's "Entry of the Gods in Valhalla" from the Elbbrücken U- and S-Bahn station in teleport Hamburg's HafenCity directly to California City!
Traveling has never been so easy: Open THE PORTAL and escape the miserable northern German weather into the Californian sun. The augmented reality installation sends you through space and time with the help of the camera in your smartphone and puts you on a viewing platform high above the failed American twin city almost 9,000 to the west, in the middle of the Mojave Desert.
Angels guard the transition, beneath you in the desert sand the complete opposite of the German showcase project spreads out. A real estate developer bought CalCity 300 square kilometers of land in the late 1950s in order to use a pyramid scheme to pound a metropolis out of the sand. after all, the unfinished road network is often used for off-road races in the Mad Max style and alternative cultural festivals, and unlike in the narrow city city, there is an infinite amount of space here ...

DAS PORTAL was developed for the exhibition project "The Gate" in Hamburg's HafenCity. The art and audio course starts on June 3, 2021 and was curated by Ellen Blumenstein for Imagine the City.
