About this app

Body Mass Index

If you want or have to lose weight, the first thing to do is weigh yourself. Are you too heavy? By how much? Today, the Body Mass Index is used to determine this.

The BMI was developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1900's. It is independent on gender and Age. It is the same formula for men and women.

The body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet index is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres.

The BMI is an attempt to quantify the amount of tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) in an individual, and then categorize that person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on that value. However, there is some debate about where on the BMI scale the dividing lines between categories should be placed. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.

The most common table used in studies is the one from the World Health Organization, which is also used by the German Organization for Nutrition. In this application we used the BMI Table published by WHO.

Broca's Formula

To measure using the Broca formula, you just need to know your height. No other factors play a role.

The Broca formula, named after the inventor Paul Broca, a French surgeon who lived between 1824 and 1880. Its relatively easy and anyone can subtract 100 from their height in their head. Anyone who was born before 1975 will remember that this formula was commonly used in their childhood.
