📖 The Book of Taqwim al-Lisan 📖

By Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri, known as Ibn al-Jawzi

Enjoy reading Ibn al-Jawzi's Taqwim al-Lisan with the best app for books and stories, offline, and many other features.

Ibn al-Jawzi says in the introduction to the book, "I have seen many of those claiming to be scholars speak in the abhorrent language of the common people, following their custom and far from the knowledge of Arabic. I have seen the correct explanation of their speech scattered throughout the books of the linguists, and collecting it is difficult for those who are lazy about seeking knowledge. Some have singled out what the common people err on the side of, some of whom have been short, and some of whom have rejected what is not appropriate to reject. So I decided to select from the appropriate sources what is widespread, leaving out what is unusual and rare, and I reject the errors that are hardly hidden."

Know that mistakes The general public varies: sometimes they add a damma to a broken letter, sometimes they add a kasra to a damma, sometimes they lengthen a shortened letter, sometimes they shorten a long one, sometimes they double a stressed letter, sometimes they lighten a stressed letter, sometimes they add to a word, sometimes they subtract from it, and sometimes they add a damma to it in the wrong place. There are other categories. I had decided to make a chapter for each of these topics. Then I decided to organize everything in a single thread and present it according to the letters of the dictionary. I will base the mention of the letter on the correct form, not the incorrect form, as that makes it easier to search for the word. This book of mine is a collection of the works of scholars of Arabic, such as al-Farra' and al-Asma'i.

The book is divided into chapters from the letter alif to the letter ya'. The reason behind its composition was that the author saw that everyone was speaking in their normal dialects, with no distinction between the elite and the common people. He also saw that explaining the linguistic correctness in the errors in it was scattered. In linguistic books, collecting them is a burden for the lazy. He saw that those who wrote about the common people's mistakes did not achieve the desired goal, so he presented this book to us, arranging it alphabetically. He created a chapter for each war and arranged the words in the chapters based on the correct war, not the incorrect one. He divided the errors into types to demonstrate that he had intended to create a chapter for each of them, had he not preferred alphabetical order. It is a dictionary for correcting and correcting the widespread and common errors among people. Ibn al-Jawzi collected the errors people make in it in a concise and easy style. He presents the word and its correction, arranged it alphabetically to facilitate research, and made linguistic corrections for these errors.

Author:
Ibn al-Jawzi is Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri. He was a Hanbali jurist, hadith scholar, historian, and theologian (510 AH/1116 CE - 12 Ramadan 597 AH). He was born and died in Baghdad. He enjoyed widespread fame and a prominent position in oratory, preaching, and writing, and he excelled in many sciences and arts. His lineage goes back to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq. He was known as Ibn al-Jawzi because of a walnut tree that once grew in his house in the town of Wasit. There was no other walnut tree in the town, and it was also said that he was named after "Fardat al-Jawz," the port of the Basra River.

- I had a pressing question about how common people spoke in ancient times in their daily lives. Did they speak Arabic? How much did they deviate from the classical Arabic found in books? And the way this lightweight book mentions words that common people make mistakes in and what is correct and eloquent in them? The answer to my question became clear to me: "These people speak really good words." In our era, our eloquent language does not even come close to the Arabic of the common people of those times.

❇️ Some quotes from Ibn al-Jawzi's book Taqwim al-Lisan ❇️

"You say: I wrote this book on the first day of such-and-such a month, or the first of such-and-such a month. The common people say: I wrote it at the beginning of such-and-such a month. This is incorrect, because the day It is not a new moon, because the crescent moon is seen at night.

"You say to someone who is driven by the wind: 'Abu Riyah,' but the common people say: 'Buriyah.'"

"This is 'al-Khunfasa' with a long vowel without a 'ha' and 'al-Khunfasa.' The common people say: 'al-Khunfasa' with an additional 'ha'."

"It is 'Jafan al-'ayn' and 'Jafan al-Sayf,' with a fat-ha on the 'jim,' but the common people pronounce it kasra."
