Oliver Twist, the son of unknown parents, grows up in a small-town workhouse under the strict rule of the smug Mr. Bumble. He is apprenticed to a mortician, flees penniless to London and falls into the clutches of the fence Fagin, who leads a gang of young pickpockets. And there is someone who has a very special interest in getting Oliver involved in crime. Charles John Huffam Dickens, (1812-1870) was an English writer. His most famous works include "David Copperfield", "A Tale of Two Cities", "A Christmas Carol" and "Oliver Twist".
Oliver Twist, or the Parish Boy's Progress, Charles Dickens's second novel, was published as a serial from 1837 to 1839, and as a three-volume book in 1838. Born in a workhouse, the orphan Oliver Twist is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker . After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the "Artful Dodger", a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin.
