Quoting the book Encyclopedia of Khittah NU: NU and Important Figures by Nur Khalik Ridwan, the history of dzikrul ghofilin has existed since 1960, which was initiated by three kiai namely, Kiai Hamid (Pasuruan), Kiai Hamim Jazuli (Gus Miek, Kediri), and Kiai Achmad Shiddiq (Jember).
The three kiai were very well known among the NU community. According to Gus Miek, there are three other figures who have contributed to the wirid dzikrul ghofilin, namely Mbah Kiai Dalhar (Magelang), Mbah Kiai Mundzir (Kediri), and Mbah Kiai Hamid (Magelang).
