The Abjad Numeral System, also called Hisāb ul-Jummal, is a decimal alphabetic numeral system in which the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet are assigned numerical values.

These Numerical Values have been used in the Arabic-speaking world since before the eighth century when positional Arabic numerals were adopted.

The word ʾabjad (أبجد) itself derives from the first four letters (A-B-J-D) of the Semitic alphabet

- the first letter Alif is represented by 1
- the second letter Bā is represented by 2
- the third letter Jeem is represented by 3
- the fourth letter Dāl is represented by 4

As you move further along the alphabet, the numerical values increase exponentially i.e.

- the final letter Ghayn is represented by 1000

Uses of the Abjad System include assigning numerical values to Arabic words for purposes of numerology. The common Islamic phrase بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم bismillāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm ('In the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate') has a numeric value of 786 (from a letter-by-letter cumulative total).

Other uses include the encoding Hijri dates (Tareekh) or Chronograms. For example:

- book titles were often made to encode the year of the book’s composition
- expressions recording grief at the death of so-and-so were made to encode the year of the death
- praise of a king’s military prowess were made to encode the year of some notable conquest

The Numerix® Application is an Arabic / Urdu Numerology Tool, which applies the Abjad Numeral Conversion to Arabic Text.

Given a sequence of Arabic text, the Numerix Tool will apply the Abjad Conversion on a Granular level; a word-by-word, letter-by-letter numerical illustration is provided in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

The Numerical values used by the Numerix tool are based on the classical standard that is prevalent across the Arab world.

There is also an alternative variation where the values for 6 of the letters are shuffled around; this is known is the Maghribi standard and was prevalent across Islamic Spain and Morocco.

The Numerix application caters for both standards, which can be configured in the Settings section.
