Definition of Wudu
In language the word ablution' in Arabic comes from the word al-wadha'ah. This word means an-Nadhzafah, namely cleanliness.
Imam an-Nawawi (d. 676 H) said in the book al-Majmu' Syarh al-Muhadzdzab:
The word Wudhu comes from wadha'ah which means cleanliness.
As for syar'i terms according to Imam Asy-Syirbini (d. 977 H) in the book Mughnil Muhtaj Ilaa Ma'rifati Ma'aani Alfadzi al-Minhaj says:
As for ablution according to syar'i terms, it is a special activity that begins with an intention. Or the activity of using water on special limbs that begins with intention.
