Tafsir Al-Tabari or Ath-Tabari whose original title was "Jami' al-Bayan fi Ta'wil al-Qur'an" is an interpretation of the Qur'an compiled by Imam Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Jarir ath-Tabari. However, it is better known as Tafsir Tabari only. This book is dubbed as the most complete and greatest book that interprets the Qur'an because of the good compilation method and its very thick and volumes, which are known to be around 26 volumes.
The author said when writing this book, "When I try to explain the Tafsir of the Qur'an and explain the meanings that God willing, it will become a book that covers every matter that humans need to know more than any other previous books. I try to mention the arguments that are agreed upon by the entire community and those that are disputed, explain the reasons for each existing school of thought and briefly explain the correct reasons based on my opinion in each related issue.”[1]
Among the special and most important elements in the methodology of Tafsir ath-Tabari is when examining each theme of the discussion which relies on opinions (or methods of interpretation) which are corroborated with sanad from verses, hadiths and atsars of the salaf in each verses of the Koran, so that this book covers all the opinions that exist among the salaf, namely the Companions, Tabi'in, and Tabi'ut tabi'in. At the same time, it becomes an explanation that his Tafsir is Tafsir bil matur which proposes a method of interpreting verses based on the traditions of the Prophet and the understanding of the salaf from among the companions, tabi'in, and tabi'ut tabi'in.
Imam ath-Tabari's method of compiling this book is very detailed in explaining every matter. He patiently examines every hadith and atsar that touches on the interpretation of verses of the Qur'an by explaining its Nuzul Asbabun (the reason for the revelation of the verse), laws, qira'at, and several sentences whose meaning needs detailed explanation. This effort resulted in a large book of commentary with volumes printed. Then this book was transcribed, and recorded from the original manuscript which was checked and examined by Shaykh al-Muhaddits Ahmad Muhammad Syakir and Shaykh Mahmud Muhammad Syakir.
