About this app

This Android application is the History of the Formation of the Hijri Calendar - Ahmad Zarkasih, Lc.. In Pdf format.

Hijri Year History

It can be said that the Hijriyah calendar, which is widely known by Muslims, is a political product issued when Sayyidina Umar was caliph. It was said that because the motivation for the formation of the calendar was for the smooth running of the state system at that time.

In his book Fathul-Baari (7/268), Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani mentions in detail the sequence of events of the birth of the Hijri calendar. And it should be noted that the names of the months in the Hijri calendar were not a revelation, but the Arabs have been using these names since the time of the Jahiliyyah; such as Sya'ban, Ramadhan, Shawwal and others. We will discuss these names in the next sub-chapter.

So, even before the Prophet was born, people already knew the names Rabi' al-Awwal and also Rabi' al-Tsani or also Rajab and Dzul-Hijjah. The point is that those names already existed and were used by the Jahiliyah. So it's not just specifically Muslims.

He (Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani) told that after 2 and a half years as caliph, in the 17th year of Hijrah to be precise, Sayyidina Umar received a letter from one of his governors, namely Abu Musa al-Asy'ari complaining that he was confused; because many of Sayyidina Umar's letters came to him but there were no dates.
