Huawei's Watch GT was known for its long battery life and slick design, but also for its slow and limited interface. The Watch GT 2 is a definite step in the right direction, but it still lacks in several important areas.
It's hard to get smartwatches right. Some of Huawei's previous offerings have fallen short, sometimes with software, and other times with battery life. Other companies have tried to do a lot more by putting a compact smartphone on your wrist with mixed results. Apple's WatchOS and Google's Wear OS both offer more tools and features than Huawei's Lite OS, but is it always the best? The Watch GT 2 aims to strip all the unnecessary out of a smartwatch and install the essentials.
Has Huawei improved its software, or is the Watch GT 2 all show and no go? In Android Authority's Huawei Watch GT 2 review, you're about to find out.
The world of smartwatch software is currently a bit of a mess, at least on Android. I'm sure you've heard this over and over again, but it needs to be mentioned. Huawei's Tizen, Wear OS, Fitbit OS, and Lite OS couldn't compete with Apple's powerful wearable operating system in raw functionality and seamless connection to phones.
This hasn't changed yet, but the overall smartwatch experience has improved significantly over the past few years. Moreover, some of my biggest complaints with Android smartwatches have been resolved. However, while I commend Huawei for its excellent hardware, there is still room for improvement in the software.
Last year's Huawei Watch GT had some issues, mainly with the sluggish interface. The hardware differences this year aren't as great as you might expect the Watch GT 2 and its predecessor are housed in similar outer casings. The main improvements to the Watch GT 2 lie under the hood in terms of performance, stability, health tracking, and battery life. GT 2 isn't a massive upgrade from the GT, so the question is whether the improvements made are enough to recommend it.
This smart watch is awesome. The Classic version takes a more executive approach than the previous model, and with its leather strap, I really dig the industrial design. The 46mm version strikes me as the nicer device of the two size options, and yes, the design of the two sizes is somewhat different. The smaller option is sleeker and sleeker with curved glass and minimal bezels, while the model I'm using looks smarter and more business-friendly with its chrome-like bezel and diver's-hour numbering surrounding the display. There is also a Sport version of the large version with a standard silicone strap.
