SMaILE is a research project with the aim of determining an effective use of the tools made available by Artificial Intelligence by promoting a conscious knowledge of its principles, codes, features and applications.
SMaILE is a project supported by the Compagnia di San Paolo foundation which involves:
Lead Partner:
Turin Polytechnic - Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA). Principal Investigator: Prof. Giacomo Como
Research and development:
University of Turin - Department of Computer Science;
Royal Holloway University of London - Department of Computer Science
Territorial partners:
POPAI, Quercetti, Umberto I boarding school, AIACE Italian Association of Friends of Essai Cinema
Assessment body: FBK-IRVAPP

SMaILE uses Game Theory and Gamification codes by adopting an educational methodology that aims at maximum involvement of children so that they can first internalize the set of knowledge and then learn the use of application tools.
Through two tools:
1. An online educational platform that helps children develop AI skills together with a series of recreational and educational activities to be carried out, both physically and virtually, with local authorities.
2. An application, the SMaILE App, which will serve both to explain Artificial Intelligence in active mode through play (learning by doing), and to provide children with some AI applications that will allow them to put into practice (creative learning and design thinking) the skills acquired thanks to the creation of an original digital creative product.
