You will not learn to write Japanese here. You will learn to understand it when someone says it, and to say it yourself.
That is a decision, not a gap. Learning to read and draw a foreign script costs months that bring you no closer to a conversation. Ether Echo removes that step and spends every available minute on the only two things that produce speech: your ear and your mouth.
THE METHOD
Every word you meet becomes a card, and every card comes back at the moment you were about to forget it. That is spaced repetition, computed by FSRS, the algorithm that models your forgetting curve instead of following a fixed schedule. You review less and retain more, because nothing comes back too early.
But the cards are not word lists. Every word arrives inside a sentence you hear, spoken by a voice, in context. You do not memorise "dog = 犬". You hear a sentence about a dog, and you understand it.
WHAT A SESSION LOOKS LIKE
- Hear a sentence, choose what it means.
- Hear it with no text at all, once the word is anchored enough to drop the crutch.
- Read a sentence in your own language, find how it is said in the other.
- Say it out loud, and speech recognition tells you whether you were understood.
None of it asks you to draw a character.
THE VOICE TUTOR
Once you have enough words, you talk to a tutor that answers out loud, live, in the language you are learning. It stays inside what you already know: it will not use words you have never met. This is where vocabulary turns into speech.
SCRIPTS THAT ARE NOT LATIN
Japanese appears in rōmaji, Mandarin in pinyin with its tones, Russian in accented transliteration, because Russian stress is never written down and changes what a word means. You always read something you can pronounce.
LANGUAGES
English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian. The interface speaks all seven, and you pick the one things are explained in.
PLACEMENT
A short assessment finds where you already are. You do not start at "hello" if you are past it.
SUBSCRIPTION
The app, the courses, the spaced repetition and every exercise are included. The subscription pays for live conversation minutes with the voice tutor: 50, 150, 300 or 600 per month depending on the tier, billed monthly or yearly. Thirty trial minutes when you sign up, no card required.
Learn Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Russian or English.
