Matr allows you to scribble words in your native language, in your handwriting to compose messages, emails, updates on social networks, and pretty much anything you could do with a conventional keyboard on your Android phone. Matr also supports traditional keyboard layouts for native languages. Currently, it supports the following languages:
- Assamese (অসমীয়া)
- Bengali (বাংলা)
- English
- Gujarati (ગુજરાતી)
- Hindi (हिंदी)
- Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ)
- Malayalam (മലയാളം)
- Marathi (मराठी)
- Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ)
- Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
- Tamil (தமிழ்)
- Telugu (తెలుగు)
Matr excels at interpreting complex character combinations characteristic of most Indian languages, which would be challenging to type on regular keyboards. It supports auto-completion of words based on scribbling or typing a few characters that make up the word. Its auto-correct feature offers suggestions when encountering misspelled words. It also supports glide typing in which users can slide their fingers from letter to letter to spell out words. Matr can also intelligently predict the next word, based on text already entered.
Matr is secure and does not collect/store personal information/data entered using Matr on its servers. The interpretation of the handwritten characters is performed on your Android phone using machine learning models, which are downloaded and stored on your phone. Matr locally stores words commonly used by you to aid auto-completion. The list of these commonly used words can be modified by the user.
Matr also supports a clipboard that can be used to store copied text, which can then be pasted on demand by the user.
Matr installation has three steps. The app installation process will guide you through these steps.
Step 1: Enable Matr in your Language and input settings. Please be aware that enabling Matr will cause a warning to pop up saying that "This input method may be able to collect all the text you type." It is a standard warning that pops up on enabling any keyboard installed from the Android Play Store. We want to reassure you that Matr does not collect any text you type whatsoever.
Step 2: Select Matr as your default input method
Step 3: Download the language packs that you want. Please note that the machine learning models used to interpret handwriting will be downloaded for each language you select and can each be around 20MB in size.
After completion of the above steps, you can start using Matr by launching your favourite chat, email, or messaging app. Language packs can be added or removed from the Matr keyboard as well. Toggle between the keyboard and handwriting modes by tapping on the handwriting and keyboard icons. Language switching is also possible by tapping on the language buttons corresponding to the installed language packs. It is even possible to switch multiple languages in the same sentence.
