About this app

Lily is one of the long-living plants, varying between 2-6 ft (60-180 cm) in length.

It forms scaly underground bulbs with perennial organs bare or without seed coats. In some North American species, the foundation of the lily bulb develops into rhizomes with many small bulbs on them. Some types of lilies develop arms. Most lily bulbs are buried deep in the soil, but a few species produce bulbs near the soil surface.

Many types of lilies form stem roots. With these, the onion grows naturally at some depth in the soil, and each year the new stem gives unexpected sources to the onion as it emerges from the ground. These roots are in addition to the basic roots that cultivate at the base of the lily bulb.

Lily flowers are large, often fragrant, and come in a wide range of colors, including whites, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds, and purples. There are markings, dots, and brushstroke shapes of lilies.

The lily plant flowers in late spring or summer. Lily flowers spread six peaks to produce flowers ranging from funnel-shaped to "Turkish hat", borne in inflorescences or umbrella-shaped flowers at the tip of the stem. The tepals are independent of each other and carry nectar at the base of each lily flower. The lily is a three-celled capsule. Lily seeds ripen in late summer. Many have adapted to cold temperate climates and exhibit variable and sometimes complex germination patterns.

Most cool temperate species of lily are deciduous species and are dormant in winter in their native habitat. However, as native to regions with hot summers and mild winters, a few species of lilies shed their leaves and enter a short dormant period in summer or autumn, sprout from autumn to winter, forming dwarf stems bearing a central rosette of leaves after receiving sufficient cold, until the branch begins to elongate in warmer weather.
