Turn-by-turn navigation that keeps going when the signal drops.

MapMap Nav gives you a clear map, routes and spoken turn-by-turn directions. Download a territory once, a country or region, and the map, route planning and guidance run on your phone, so you can drive, cycle or walk through it without a mobile signal or wifi.

WHY MAPMAP NAV IS DIFFERENT

• Works offline. Once a territory is installed, MapMap Nav needs no connection to show the map, plan a route or guide you along it. A few extras do need a connection, and they are listed below.

• No tracking. We don't build a location history of you, and we don't sell or share your location. With no connection, offline navigation sends nothing. With one, a few features still use it, even on a downloaded territory: the faster-route check sends your position and destination about every two minutes during guidance, spoken road and landmark names are fetched by sending those instructions' words, and the country lookup and dropped-pin naming send the points they look up. None of it is kept as a history of where you've been.

• Recorded voice guidance. Directions are spoken in a recorded MapMap voice, not your phone's text-to-speech, and carry on with the screen locked. Choose a female or male British English voice: for both, the words for turns and distances are built into the app. Leave the route and a new one is planned and announced. With a connection, instructions can name the road you're turning onto and anchor turns to landmarks: "Turn right just after the Red Lion".

• Voice commands, recognised on your phone. During a journey, press and hold the voice button and say a short command such as "report a closed road", "what's ahead" or "repeat that". The microphone is on only while you hold, speech is turned into text on your phone, and no audio is recorded or sent. Settings lists every command under What you can say.

• Search that keeps up. Find addresses and places by name, with results ranked around where you are. Type a full UK postcode and it comes first. Set a destination in a couple of taps.

• Plan it your way. Car, lorry, bike or walking routes. Avoid tolls, motorways or ferries, and add a stop. Lorry routes use the size and weight you enter and OpenStreetMap restriction data, which can be incomplete: follow the road signs. With a connection you can also set a departure time, or an arrival time and see when to leave, and find fuel, charging, coffee, food or parking along your route.

• Live traffic. With a connection, routes and arrival times use live traffic on England's motorways and major A roads, where National Highways publishes it. The route preview says what traffic adds and colours the route where it is slow.

• Screen off while driving, if you want it. Switch it on in Settings and the screen rests after a delay you choose, from 15 seconds to 5 minutes, while spoken guidance carries on. Tap the screen to bring the map back.

WHAT NEEDS A CONNECTION

• Setting up the app, and downloading or updating territories.
• Place search.
• Maps and routes anywhere you have no territory installed.
• Spoken road and place names. They are fetched when you plan a route with a connection. Without one, an instruction that would name a road plays a short tone instead, and the turn is still shown on screen.
• Live traffic and road incident information.

SETTING UP

MapMap Nav offers to take your email address when you first open it, and you can skip it: online maps, search and routes work without one, within a monthly limit. Offline maps, and online maps past that limit, need a verified email. It is the only personal detail the app asks for and it is never used for marketing. To delete your account, choose Delete my account in Settings: it is deleted straight away, from inside the app.
