In Cobra Coral you will have the opportunity to know the biology of the species of true corals and the main false corals that occur in the state of Minas Gerais. You can identify the animals yourself with an illustrated identification key.

Coral snakes are very striking snakes and stand out in the environment due to their coloration. These animals have black, red and white rings all over the body. The true corals, belonging to the genus Micrurus, are venomous snakes of the Elapidae family. They are the only Brazilian venomous snakes not to present loreal orifice, orifice between the nostril and the eye, characteristic of the snakes of the family Viperidae, such as rattlesnake, jararacas and surucucu.

False corals, unlike true ones, are not venomous. The ability of one animal to mimic the morphological features of another is known as mimicry. When they take on a coloration similar to that of true corals, the false ones can scare away possible predators and competitors. This is due to the fact that animals that have very strong colors and well-marked lines along the body are considered poisonous, so other animals prefer to avoid them.

Thus, true and false corals are often confused. Seeking a solution to assist in the correct identification of coral snakes, as well as to disseminate knowledge about these animals, biologists from the Scientific Serpent Collection of the Ezequiel Dias Foundation (Funed) developed this application.
