ABC Crosswords is an ABC Club app for children who are learning to read and write. Let your child collect objects and animals and at the same time practice hearing how letters and sounds sound and writing words. The ABC Club apps train the basic and important phonological awareness and word decoding. Phonological awareness means the ability to divide a word into different sounds (analysis) and the reverse, to be able to put different sounds together into words (synthesis).
ABC crosswords specifically train the ability to identify the sounds in words and put letters together to form words. What does the letter sound like? Look in the crossword for the correct place for the letter. At level 2, children choose from all the letters of the alphabet to put words together. When the entire crossword puzzle is completed, the game round is over and the player receives a star as a reward.
The degree of difficulty can be adjusted in different ways so that the exercise is at the right level for the child, e.g. by choosing upper/lower case. When a group of letters is completed, an object or animal appears next to the current group of letters on the start page. This also shows how far the child has come in the app.
Some children probably recognize the pictures and exercises from school. The ABC club is a well-spread teaching aid in learning to read and write for preschool class–grade 3.
Production support for this teaching material has been received from the Special Education School Authority.
