The Quran or Koran (in Arabic: القرآن, transl. al-Qurʾān, lit. 'the recitation') is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe that the Quran is the literal word of God (Allah) revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of twenty-three years.
The word 'Quran' is derived from the Arabic verb that means to recite or recitation; therefore, the Quran is a 'recitation' or something that should be recited.
