Welcome to the magical world of the witches of Benevento, known as the Janare! Their mysterious name has two possible origins: it could derive from the Latin word ianua, meaning "door," or from Diana, the ancient goddess of the moon and the hunt, worshiped by women accused of witchcraft.
At the center of this legend is the majestic Walnut Tree of Benevento, a legendary tree that, according to tradition, was the witches' meeting place. It is said that the Janare anointed themselves with a magical ointment and repeated a special formula to take flight and reach their symbolic tree. There, they danced and celebrated their nocturnal rites, far from prying eyes.
