About this app

Close Reader is an e-book reader with an AI that has read your book exactly as far as you have. Hold a word for a translation that fits the sentence, ask who someone is, or talk the book over. It never looks past your page.

Open your own EPUB, FB2, MOBI, AZW3, PDF and TXT books (DRM-free), in any language. There’s no store and no sign-up: add a file from your phone, or share it to Close Reader from your email or a messenger. Or connect your own library through OPDS catalogs, such as a Calibre, Kavita or Komga server.

Help right where you stumble
• Press and hold a word: the translation fits this very sentence. Reading in your own language? You get a plain definition.
• Drag the handles to take in a phrase, or translate the whole sentence or paragraph.
• Select a name, and “Who’s this?” reminds you who that character or place is, from the pages you’ve read, and shows where they first appeared.
• “Explain” gives the background of a passage: history, allusions, idioms and old-fashioned phrasing, in plain words.
• Questions about real history or the author get answers from the web, with sources.

The AI knows the book only up to your page
Every answer comes from what you’ve read, up to the last line on your screen. In “No spoilers” mode we don’t even tell the AI which book it is, so it can’t fill in the plot from memory. Finished it, or rereading? Switch to “Whole book”.

Talk the book over
• Ask for a recap, who’s who, or why a character did what they did. “Detailed answer” goes deeper.
• Ask where something happened: the answer lists the places, and a tap opens the book there.
• Answers link to the passages they rely on. Start a new chat any time, or discuss a passage in a chat of its own; your notes can come along.
• In the contents, every chapter you’ve read has a recap, and rings show how much of each you’ve read.

Find your way
• The slider is a map of the book: chapters, bookmarks, notes and the time left in the chapter.
• Jump anywhere to look around: your reading place stays put, and one tap takes you back.
• Search the whole book. Footnotes open in a card over the page, pictures open full screen.

Keep what matters
• “Save word” keeps a word with its translation and the sentence where you met it. Flashcards adapt to your memory, with a daily reminder.
• Highlight passages, write notes, share a quote as a picture, and save good AI answers. Bookmark pages, or mark a spot with “I’m here”. Vocabulary exports to CSV, notes to Markdown.

• Four themes, fonts, text size and line spacing; pages or scrolling.
• Phones and tablets, portrait or landscape, with a two-page spread in landscape.
• The app speaks 20 languages and translates into more than 40.
• An optional account keeps books, reading positions, notes, chats and vocabulary in sync on your phone and tablet; everything works without one too.

Private by design
Your books stay on your device unless you choose to sync them. Text goes to the AI only when you ask for help; we don’t store it, and it isn’t used to train AI models. No ads, no tracking, and we never sell your data.

Energy and plans
AI help runs on energy ⚡. Translating a word costs 1 ⚡, and bigger requests show their price first. Your first 7 days come with 1,500 ⚡ free, no account needed; after that, AI help needs a plan or energy you buy. Reading, notes and flashcards are always free.
Every feature is on every plan. The Light, Medium and Max subscriptions only add more energy each month (15,000, 40,000 and 80,000 ⚡), and Medium starts with a 7-day free trial. Extra energy you buy never expires. Subscriptions renew automatically; you can cancel any time in Google Play.
