Blessed Fr. Moreau was a French priest in the nineteenth century in the period after the French Revolution and a period of religious persecution. In the aftermath, France was in need of an educational system. It was during this period the Blessed Fr. Moreau founded the Congregation of Holy Cross, an order dedicated to education.
Possibly the most visited quote of Moreau addresses his view of education: “We shall always place education side by side with instruction; the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart. While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven.” For Moreau, the purpose of education was for the purpose of fostering a world, “to bring about a better time” that recognized the human dignity of all.
In order to support the members of the community, Moreau would become an extensive writer providing sermons, circular letters, reflections, prayers, and meditations in order to foster the spiritual development and transformation of the community. It is from these writings the Daily Moreau draws its daily reflections from.
