Tonight it drops to −4°F. PipeGuard tells you the risk to your pipes, the exact steps for your home before 9 pm, and keeps a record — with the time of every step — that an insurance adjuster can read.
Tell it where the house is; that is the only answer the app needs before it can work. On a risky evening a warning arrives around 8 pm with the risk and the first step in it. Open the checklist, tick the steps as you do them, and in the morning the app tells you when it is safe to turn the taps off again — or that it is still freezing and they should keep dripping.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Tell it where the house is. Your location, or the name of your town; the forecast is fetched for that place only.
2. Get warned around 8 pm. On every risky night: the overnight low, the hours at the temperature pipes freeze at, and the first thing to do.
3. Run the checklist and tick as you go. Drip the farthest cold tap, open the cabinets under sinks on outside walls, keep the thermostat at 55°F or higher. In the morning: the all-clear, or "still freezing — keep dripping".
WHAT YOU GET
• Tonight's risk, 0 to 10, from the forecast low, the hours at the pipe threshold, the wind, and your house.
• A checklist tuned to your home — which taps, which cabinets, the crawl-space heat tape — built from seven questions you can answer any time.
• A season journal: every night with its forecast, the steps and the time you did them. Skipped nights too, because a complete record is the credible one.

WHAT YOU NEED

• Notifications on, if you want the evening warning. The app asks the first time it matters, never at launch.
• A phone that is switched on. Warnings are scheduled by the phone itself, so a phone that is off cannot ring — and the app tells you when it has not been able to check the forecast.
PRIVACY
Your location is used on the phone and inside the forecast request only; the town you type is looked up by your phone's own geocoder. Your home profile, journal, notes and photos stay on the phone and we never receive them. No account, no sign-up, no server of ours, no advertising. If your phone's own backup is on, the profile and journal go to your Google account along with your other apps, and nowhere else. Crash reports can be switched off in Settings. Forecasts come from the US National Weather Service and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Tonight's risk, the basic checklist, the evening warning and the morning check are free, every winter. The season pass — the checklist tuned to your home, the journal and the PDF — is one purchase that lasts six months, one winter, and then simply ends. You do not pay in summer.
