About this app

illustread is a reading app that combines AI-generated illustrations with classic Japanese literary works available on Aozora Bunko (a Japanese online library). From short stories to novels, it delivers a new reading experience with AI-generated illustrations.

■ What you can expect
As you read through the pages, illustrations matching the scene appear at the top of the screen. Scenes that are difficult to see from text alone, such as "the scenery the protagonist saw," "landscapes in dreams," and "the appearance of a strange room," quietly unfold in rhythm with your reading.

■ Included works (all in the public domain)

- Natsume Soseki, "Kokoro" — Novel. A psychological drama involving a love triangle between the teacher, myself, and K.

- Edogawa Ranpo, "The Human Chair" — The monologue of a man hiding inside a chair.

- Edogawa Ranpo, "The Man Who Traveled with a Picture Scroll" — A story of the Asakusa Twelve-Story Building and fantasy.

- Yumeno Kyusaku, "The Bottled Hell" — Letters from a brother and sister washed ashore on a deserted island.

- Miyazawa Kenji, "The Restaurant of Many Orders" — The truth behind the mysterious restaurant.

- Akutagawa Ryunosuke, "The Spider's Thread" — The single thread that Buddha lowered into hell.

All works are in the public domain, with copyrights expired. Works with illustrations will be added sequentially.

Approximately 880 works from Aozora Bunko (a Japanese online library) containing only the text are also included and can be viewed using the "All" filter (text viewing is unlocked by watching advertisements).

■ About Illustrations (Important)

All illustrations in this app are generated by AI (Google Gemini) under human supervision. Respecting the descriptions of the original work, scenes not written in the text are intentionally depicted ambiguously. Illustrations are merely to assist the reading experience and are not the only interpretation of the original work.

■ About Ads

The first few scenes of each work can be unlocked without ads. Subsequent illustrations require playing rewarded video ads. Ad-viewing is a mechanism to allow you to enjoy masterpieces for free. There is currently no ad-free premium version or paid features.

■ Privacy
This app does not require user registration. We do not collect any personal information such as names, email addresses, or phone numbers. We only collect anonymous installation IDs, crash reports, and usage statistics (Firebase Analytics / Crashlytics), and use this information solely for app quality improvement.
