About this app

A messenger that helps hold back scams, bullying and abuse before they reach you.

KindChat is a full-featured messenger with built-in protection. Your message is checked on your phone before it is sent, and again when it arrives. If the phone is unsure, and in some languages (such as French and Turkish) for most messages, our own server in the EU checks it as well: without your identity. It is stored only with your consent ("Help improve moderation"), pseudonymised, to improve our own moderation model. When the check detects harassment, hate, threats, scams or grooming, it holds the message back before it is sent.

THE BUILT-IN GUARD
• Messages are checked on your phone before they are sent, and again when they arrive
• Text in images and video frames is checked too, as text; images and videos are checked on the device for nudity
• One fair standard for everyone: civil disagreement, strong opinions and dark humor are fine, harm is not
• Calls are not checked

DOCUMENTS
• Send documents: PDF, text, CSV, Word and Excel, with Plus
• See a preview in the chat: the first page and page count for PDFs, the start of the text for text files
• Documents are checked before they are sent and when they arrive
• Very long documents cannot be checked yet on some phones

ENCRYPTED
• End-to-end encryption (Signal protocol) for chats, groups, photos, videos and documents
• Calls are end-to-end encrypted when both people have KindChat 1.1.14 or newer; with an older version the app shows a notice
• Not end-to-end encrypted: our server reads messages to KindChat Support, a report hands over the reported message, and display names, group names, group descriptions, welcome texts, group pictures and reactions are not end-to-end encrypted yet
• No tracking, no profiling, no passing on to ad networks or data brokers

YOU STAY IN CONTROL
• Pulse: a private feed for your contacts only, sorted by time rather than by an algorithm; only the author sees who liked a post
• Add contacts with an invite code
• Verify contacts in person with safety numbers
• Mute, block or report; the person you report won't learn who reported
• People decide on consequences for an account because of behaviour, with a written explanation and a right to appeal
• One device per account; a new sign-in signs the old device out

• Photos and videos are now checked much faster, and the app stays usable meanwhile.

• Messages written offline are sent by themselves once the connection is back.
• A message that failed goes out again with one tap.
