About this app

When exchanging currency overseas, the fees charged vary significantly depending on "where" you exchange it.
RateHunt is an app that helps you choose the right place in Japanese.

■ Supported 8 Cities

Switching cities from the top right of the screen will completely change the estimated fees, shops, and points to note.

■ Sorting Exchange Locations by Estimated Fees

The app displays exchange locations such as "City Exchange Offices," "Airport Exchange Offices," "Banks," and "Hotel Exchanges" sorted by estimated fees from lowest to highest. The length of the bars also shows the difference.

The categories vary by city. For example, the "Bank" category is not available for two Philippine cities.

We were unable to confirm branches that handle Japanese yen cash, so we haven't created a separate category for them.

Conversely, in Taipei, banks rank as the most advantageous option.

Two cities in South Korea have a category called "automatic currency exchange machines." This is because they can be used as an option when both exchange offices and banks are closed.

You can also check today's standard exchange rate in the form of "approximately how many baht/dons/pesos 10,000 yen is worth."

■ "Airports aren't always a bad deal"

The best option varies depending on the city.

・Bangkok… The counters in the arrival lobby are unfavorable. It's best to wait until you reach a specialty shop in the city.
・Ho Chi Minh City… The difference between airport bank booths and the city is very small. It's fine to exchange before leaving the exit.
・Hanoi… There's a big difference between the counters lined up. Compare before exchanging.
・Manila… The difference with the city is small. However, exchange within the terminal where you arrive.
・Cebu… Malls in the city are considerably more advantageous. The airport is only good for immediate needs.
・Taipei… The exchange rate is the same at both the airport and the city. It's best to exchange everything at once.
* Seoul: The difference between the city and the exchange rate is the largest among the 8 cities. Exchange only what you need for now, and then exchange the rest in busy areas like Myeongdong.
* Busan: You can exchange at the airport, but not at the bank inside the building; use the shop at the station across the pedestrian crossing.

For each airport, we've included directions after arrival, counter opening hours, and actual differences observed.

■ Things to be careful of in each city:

* Bangkok: There are three exchange chains with very similar names but belonging to different companies. Distinguish them by the color of their signs.
* Two cities in Vietnam: From February 2026, customers who exchange money at unlicensed shops will also be subject to fines and confiscation of their foreign currency. Here's how to check the posted rates:
* Two cities in the Philippines… We'll explain that exchange rates can vary significantly from counter to counter even within the same mall, and that you should always count the banknotes you receive on the spot.
* Taipei… We'll explain that there are no street-side currency exchange shops, that bank rates are the same nationwide, and that bank counters are open until 3:30 PM on weekdays.
* Two cities in South Korea… We'll explain that the exchange rate charts in stores are in the format "100 yen = XX won," which is the opposite of how it's read in Japan, and that you need your original passport to exchange money.

■ You can check nearby currency exchange offices on a map.

Currency exchange offices in the city and at the airport are displayed on a map and in a list.

The pins are color-coded and shaped to distinguish them by type, making them easy to identify at a glance.

Tapping on a store will take you to its official website, Google Maps, directions, or phone number.

■ Usable even without a signal

The store's location, name, business hours, and estimated fees are included in the app.

You can use it even if you don't have a SIM card overseas or if the connection is unstable. (Viewing today's benchmark rate, map, and links to external sites requires an internet connection.
The rate is saved once retrieved and will be used if an internet connection is unavailable.)

■ Location information is not required.

Location information is not requested simply by launching the app.

It is only requested when you press "Sort by proximity to current location."

Even without permission, you can sort by distance from the city center.

■ No ads, no in-app purchases

【Notes on Use】

・The displayed percentage of the fee is an "estimate" for each type of shop.

・Actual rates for each shop are not included. All shops of the same type are treated the same.

・The estimate is determined by researching the actual rates of shops in that city and comparing them to the benchmark rate for the same day.

The date the figures were researched is displayed within the app.

・For categories where actual rates could not be verified, "Estimated" is displayed.

Actual rates for hotel currency exchange have not been verified for all cities where that category exists.

* The base rate is the interbank exchange rate, before any shop fees are deducted. No shop will exchange currency at this exact rate.

* Actual shop rates may differ. Please always check the shop's official website or in person before exchanging currency.

* This app does not verify whether shops have the necessary operating licenses.

In some countries, such as Vietnam, exchanging currency at unlicensed shops can result in fines and confiscation of the user's currency.

Please always check the shop's notices yourself.

* Shop information is based on OpenStreetMap data. Because this map is created by volunteers,
shop closures, relocations, and type classifications may differ from reality.

* Some shops are not registered. Even if a shop is not displayed nearby, it may actually exist.

* The map pin locations are from OpenStreetMap and may be off by several meters to tens of meters compared to other map apps.

* This app does not provide investment or asset management advice.
